Beauty tips, cute clothes, hours logged in the gym and a strict diet regimen-, these are the things that we turn to when we want to feel happy again; when we want to recapture the spark of our youth, and make our bodies feel GREAT again!

And all of those things work, they help us to be healthier, to feel more confident and to even look at the world with a wider, more rose tinted and relaxed lens, however, these things are not enough.

They are perfect and essential for a balanced life don’t get me wrong, but these things are only half of the coin when it comes to being truly healthy and living that youthful life.

So what is the other half?

It’s the intangible side of you; it’s the part of you that controls your desires, your emotions and even whether you even do any of the above activities!

Rewiring Mindset and Editing Your Life Story

In the last post, we talked about some of the ways we can repurpose our limiting beliefs and even broke them down to specific situations!

Today, I’m spilling the tea on how to rewire your mindset, which is a fancy way of saying changing your perspective on your goals and your mental blocks.

We’re going to be looking at the things that cause resistance around your goals and how to blast them back into the abyss that they dared to fly up from in the first place.

So how do you go about changing your perspective on these things in real time?

You * drum roll * start reconnecting to yourself.

Here’s the thing, a lot of us are so disconnected from ourselves that if we didn’t live in this body, we would have no idea of who we were.

We spend a lot of time getting to know others and enjoying their company, building bonds and establishing trust and respect, however, when it comes to doing the same thing for ourselves, we shy all the way away from doing so!

I know, you’re thinking, how I can be disconnected from myself; I literally am myself and am in this body, with these thoughts and these feelings!

Yes, all true, however, let me know if any of these things resonate with you …

  Sitting in a café / movie theatre/ bar/ you name it- all alone and feeling lonely AF and hyper aware of other people having the best time. Feeling your heart beat staccato in a hollow rhythm because you want what they have. You want to also not be alone. You feel weird and awkward being alone.

  You argue with yourself a lot and avoid certain thoughts when they pop up because you just don’t feel like dealing with them or they hurt too much.

  You feel like a failure too much, you rarely look in the mirror and LOVE what is looking back at you.

  You’re fixated on working on ONE area of your life because to you it is failing and since it is, so are you.

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of those ( no matter how salty) then the truth of it is that there is at least a part of you that is disconnected from the other parts of you and to be honest,  many of us were not raised to cultivate a strong mental relationship with ourselves to begin with.

We rarely check in with ourselves to see how we truly feel about something or what we truly want, instead, we allow someone else (our authority figures/ haters/ lovers/celebrities) to make those decisions for us, so that we do what is expected and keep the peace.

And the more we do that, the more we start to separate from who we are- hence all those movies about ‘Finding Yourself!” – and the less we trust ourselves, the less we enjoy our own company, the less we believe in ourselves, because we are slowly eroding the bond we have with ‘me, myself and I’.

So to change your perspective, you have to be willing to repair that bond.

The Biggest Misconception About Limiting Beliefs and Mental Blocks Blown Up!

Today I’m spilling the tea on limiting beliefs, mental blocks and trigger moments and why they manifest in the way that they do!

Limiting beliefs just as the name implies are those ‘negative’ and challenging thoughts that swirl in our head so much that you begin to believe them as facts. They are the thoughts that keep you from believing your success is possible and can drive you to take actions that are not in alignment with our progress.

So where do they come from?

Usually when you are truly being attacked by your limiting beliefs there are for three main reasons.

  • Sometimes you create beliefs that are so far from our current circumstances that your minds simply do not believe in the possibility of it coming true in the way you want them to.
  • You create our beliefs and mantras while ignoring your internal alarm systems that are protesting the insanity of this belief.
  • You create these beliefs as shields when our goals are too big, frightening and you’re scared to fully commit.

Contrary to EVERYONE’s belief of limiting beliefs, I do not think they are bad things, infact I think they are your Ego’s best work in terms of not only protecting you, but also gauging where you actually stand on your own belief system.

The Real Reason You Procrastinate (It Has Nothing to Do With Self Control)

Before we dive head first into the world of limiting beliefs, mental blocks, insecurities and ‘negative energy’, let’s first talk about the thing that  spawned all of them in the first place *drum roll please*  your end goals.

But first … let me know if this situation has ever happened to you…

You’re super excited about a desire, a goal or an idea you have and honestly it’s the best idea in the world to you and everything is going amazing in your head and this thing is making you feel so happy, excited and joyous.

Then, just as you’re in the process of conceptionalising it, you start thinking of all the ways this amazing thing is going to crash and burn and take you down with it.

(Dramatic I know, but am I lying?)

“What if I do this and then it totally blows up in my face and I’ve already sank all of this time into it?”

Or

You think about all the reasons why it’s dumb AF.

“But I mean, who would want this anyway…, it’s fun for me, but maybe the world isn’t ready for this?”

Or

You think about the fact that if you somehow do actually bring this thing into existence, then it’ll be too good to be true, the other shoe will drop and ruin everything.

 Or

You thing that this amazing thing holds the power to change your life too drastically and you’re not sure you’re even ready for all of that just yet.

“If this worked out, it would be so freaking awesome! My life would be so much better, but God I would be so crushed if something happened to take this away or what if it changes my life so much and then it just stops working? I’d be devastated!”

Or maybe you feel all of these things and it’s stressing you out, because, we’re multi-capable like that lol.

Sounds at all familiar?

Ok and then there is that feeling in your head, where all of these challenging and doubting thoughts begin to swirl around, making you feel foggy, tired and ready to bury the idea into the deepest recesses in your mind,  * insert shifty smile* for safekeeping obvs.

Followed closely by the pain in your chest- a kind of hollow feeling – a pang of loss as you bury the idea/ dream/desire even further and mourn the death of what would have been a really good thing, had those thoughts not come and crashed the creative party.

*Let’s have a moment of silence of this once amazing idea- gone to rest way too soon*

Now instead of thinking about the awesomeness of your idea, dreams, desires, etc enter self sabotage, fear, desperation and anxiety.

And they crowd up your mind and replace the joy, happiness and excitement you once felt, while dragging you down, down, doowwnnn into deepest abyss …if we allow them to.

And if you do allow the limiting beliefs to take over, then, even when you want more, even when you’re fighting the good fight and meditating, and journaling and trying to get your head on right and be that progressive bad-ass you know you can be….nothing great happens.

In the back of your mind, those emotions and feelings remain, ruling from the shadows, waiting for you to drop your guard so that they can pounce like the predators you know them to be!

And then life starts to progressively get a bit duller and more stressful and one day you wake up, wondering what the hell happened and why you feel so distrustful and anxious about the world and why you’re not motivated to do more or anything really.

So am I saying it’s your end goals fault that you feel like this?

no boo

Nope.

I’m saying that when it comes down to it, the things that are so amazing to us, have the most epic potential and life changing benefits definitely, causes us the most stress and can make us feel so unworthy, thereby creating the limiting beliefs and mental blocks to protect us from the hurt they could potentially cause us.

Failure is Only the Beginning of Your Level Up

If you had told me just two years ago that my epic failures would have paved the way for me to be on track to living my ideal life, I would have probably punched you in the arm and blocked you.  (maybe)

First of all, don’t call out my failures like that. Second, don’t lie!

All I could see then, was how everything was out of control, how exhausted I was and how sure I was that it was only a matter of time before everything went tits up again.

I was seriously blinded to the fact that just like in those books I love, I – the heroine of this piece- was simply going through her growing pains that would finally open her eyes to the truth about what she soul deeply wanted and lead her on the path to getting it.

( Hindsight is an amazing thing when you finally get it, but in the moment, these events feel like you’re drowning in a deep abyss and ain’t glamorous or as fun as they make it seem in the books and movies!)

And if you had told me that I could turn my life around through journaling, there would have been a real high possibility that I would have thrown water at you and told you to ‘ Buzz off’.

And it’s not because I didn’t like journaling, rather it was HOW I had been journaling that would have made me think that you were just being annoying for no reason … and possibly taunting me.

For me, journaling was tantamount to simply reporting the details of my day into a book, to vent about something or to just express myself in a safe-ish and private place, with some thoughts about how I felt about an event, but certainly not as I use it now.

It was not an activity I saw being even remotely possible to being  described as  ‘ life changing’ or even something that could help me in real time, so you cannot begin to imagine my shock when I started learning about journaling prompts and actually tried them out for 10 days!

It was such an eye-opener for me!

Who knew, I could get this level of insight into myself from just expressing myself on paper? Everyone….apparently.

I had enrolled in a free event with Amanda Frances, and it was to help entrepreneurs to release the blocks they had around their businesses and money, while guiding us to being honest about how we envisioned them to function and convert.

Now Amanda is one of the few business coaches who believes that mindset goes a long ass way towards success in all forms and so, her homework was in the form of journaling prompts.

And these prompts really opened up my world to what I had OBVIOUSLY been missing out on for way too long.

With the prompts, I had to really zero in on the question and be honest with myself about the corresponding answer, since that would determine how I structured the business and get those results I was craving.

This process also showed me just how much I was still lying to myself and attempting to keep even my thoughts about my future and my desires as safe and vague as possible.

It brought home with startling clarity that if I was still playing small  even to myself, then I was in a real bad way after all and I was tired of that!

I was tired of feeling like I couldn’t express my real wants even to myself because the crushing disappointment of not finding a way to make them a reality may send me crazy.

I was tired of feeling like I was being called for so much more but in the moment being stuck AF and could not see the trees for the bushes.

I was exhausted living in the problem and not allowing myself to believe that I was capable of the solution.

  I had somewhere along the way accepted that failure was more likely and reasonable an outcome than me actually achieving what I wanted to.

I was so over all of that!

I wanted to be honest  with myself finally and I could feel this block in my brain, hiding my true wants away from me, in the same manner as when I hide sweets from my 5 year old cousin- just out of reach.

It was beyond infuriating and in my frustration, I challenged myself to flip the script and instead of getting angry and petulant, I’d calm down and get to the bottom of this.

So I took the time to clear my mind ( not easy at all!) , to relax my breathing, and to focus on the truth of the questions presented to me.

I also allowed myself to not stress about the length of my answers, rather just on being honest and not shying away from the truth, even as my brain tried and kept trying to switch gears. Honestly, it felt like i was trying to wrangle a stubborn horse into a pen!

And do you know what?

It brought such clarity to my life; I started to get excited again and my brain reignited with so many ideas for what I wanted to implement in my future and business. I felt some of the tension I’d had from wrangling my thoughts and some of my limiting beliefs melt away and I felt lighter.

My head no longer hurt and felt foggy, my shoulders were suspiciously looser and my whole body was buzzing with a very different type of energy.

Re-reading my answers a day later- because I believe in letting things marinate- I allowed them to trigger whatever emotion denoted within me and gave myself permission to simply feel them.

To not scrutinize them, or wrestle with them but to simply let them wash over me like waves crashing on the sandy shores and allow my real thoughts to come to light from the vault in my mind.

Allowed them to challenge, inspire and dare me to do something about them, to turn them from fleeting thoughts triggered by intuitive nudges into aligned actions.

And that was what I did.

For those who know me, you know that I love writing things down and creating resources (I have too many outlined ideas for projects! Guys it’s a problem!).

So that is what I did.

I set pen to paper and created the Level Up Journal Prompter, because I needed to go through the self –reflective process again, but this time the target would not be for my business, rather it would be for my life.

I had started to feel disconnected from myself in ways that defy explanation and meditation was  just not enough to help me to feel reconnected again, plus I was listening to a lot of mindset coaches and they introduced the concept of ‘ Next Level Self’ which for all intents and purposes was your ideal, leveled up version of self.

The version of you that has moved past your blocks, is living the life you could only have dreamt of right now and has an improved mindset.

And I knew that to get to the true, honest to God version of my leveled up self I had to go through the steps. I had to reconnect with myself first- become consciously aware of whom I was right now, and become aware of the other factors that would be impacting on my growth.

So I sat down, created the questions, answered them, and guided myself along the path to not only reconnecting to who I am right now, but also who I am growing into!

How My Epic Failures Allowed for a Fully Free Life

It never occurred to me that just 4 months after my 30th birthday I’d be moving back in with my parents, especially when I had successfully done all the things I had been told to accomplish and a bit more by age 27.

I was an amazing journalist who got to cover all the top shows and pageants, who was schmoozing with Ambassadors and got specially invited to their functions.

I was even one of the extremely few journalists to be allowed to cover an event in the depths of the American Embassy in Barbados all while making decent pay.

I lived with my husband who supported my dreams and wanted to happily build our family together and we had not too long moved from our starter home in a really nice community, into an amazing townhouse styled apartment which was even closer to his work.

My family both biological and the in laws, all got along and I received nothing but love from my husband’s family. His mom was like my second maid-of-honour!

My new neighbours were fun and awesome. And I was ecstatic when my friend Jax moved in next door and we had our wine and chill nights with one of our other neighbours, Jen, a working single mother of one.

I was living the dream of writing for a living, I fully owned my car  and was about to launch a new business with one of my best friends- turned sister (we got so extremely close that people really thought we could be twins- despite us looking nothing alike lol), while launching my own solo business in graphic design!

So what the hell happened?!

How did I go from living that life, to moving back with my parents’ seconds away from being absolutely  destitute and willing myself  not cry because I was sure I would flood the parish, if not the whole country?

Turns out the things that look great on paper aren’t always that great or long lasting, particularly when they are not your END goals, but you decide you can settle for them.

How to Release Your Pent-up Emotions

There is a certain feeling you get right in the middle of your heart when you’re about to be ambushed by emotions you’d rather not deal with, specifically those you have been resolutely pushing down into the deep recesses of your mind as often as you can.

Here’s the funny thing about emotions, they  simply do not care how much you try to avoid them!

Trust me, whatever you are resisting emotions wise, will persist until you acknowledge, validate and finally release them.

Worry and frustration would slither into my head in the form of tension- a tightening around my forehead- leading to the kind of pressure that always threatened a headache, before releasing the floodgates to my insecurities and fears.

An answering call of frantic energy would then assail me and I have been known to call my friends in a miserable panic, saying I felt as if I was ‘ missing something’, or ‘needing just one win’ and of course ‘ not being able to focus’, because of this repressed energy.

It’s a kind of energy that is hard to explain, but once you’ve felt it, you know exactly what it is, the slippery slide to stress-thinking to becoming overwhelmed and you just feel ‘off’.

If you have ever felt like the above, then I have great news for you!

It will feel like a compulsion and your body will straight up call mutiny in its impulsive need to betray you. There are no commands that work to halt the roar of the emotions that will come to the surface and unleash themselves in an insane bid to embarrass you or to plunge you deeper into the despair.

The despair is the safe part.
